Fundy Biosphere 2025 Highlights

By: Charlotte Cullinan – Dickinson

2025 was a year of action for the Fundy Biosphere Region. Our work focused on forest restoration, biodiversity monitoring, conservation planning, community engagement, sustainable recreation and more. Alongside our partners and communities, we continued to advance practical projects fostering the resilience of people and places. Key accomplishments for the year are listed below:

Forestry & Climate

  • Successfully planted 50,000 trees through the Forests of the Future program to support habitat restoration, watershed health, and climate resilience
  • Continued expansion of the Fundy Maple program, supporting sustainable forest use and local producers
  • Partnered with the University of New Brunswick Capstone Team to conduct applied research and develop a comprehensive sugar bush and forest management plan that supports conservation objectives while guiding sustainable land use and long-term operations
  • Completed 30 Wetland Ecosystem Services and Protection Surveys (WESPs)
  • Completed 8 carbon inventories.

Community & Collaboration

  • Hosted “Meeting by the Bay” National Gathering, welcoming UNESCO Biosphere Regions, Geoparks, and heritage sites from across Canada for shared learning and collaboration.
  • Led Ocean Week Fundy as New Brunswick’s regional hub for Ocean Week Canada and had over 15 events.
  • Attended 20+ public events across the region, including community science, school programs, workshops, guided walks, outreach events and more.

Conservation & Biodiversity

  • Launched a Bank Swallow monitoring program, surveying Fundy’s coastal cliffs and establishing baseline data for this species at risk
  • Continued advancing ecological corridor planning to support wildlife movement and habitat connectivity
  • Made progress on recognizing three areas in Salisbury for their biodiversity value, celebrating the community’s strong commitment to long-term land stewardship and conservation.

As we move into 2026, Fundy Biosphere Region will continue building on this momentum. Our focus remains on strengthening partnerships, expanding conservation initiatives, supporting climate adaptation, and deepening community engagement across the region. With growing interest in ecological corridors, sustainable recreation, forest restoration, and community science, the coming year offers new opportunities to protect and celebrate this exceptional landscape.

We thank all of our partners, volunteers, landowners, researchers, funders, and community members for their leadership and dedication. Together, we look forward to another year of collaborative action and stewardship across the Fundy Biosphere Region!
